HealthWatch Review

I was scouring the net for a quality fitness tracker watch when I came across an advert of this watch. I must say that I was a little skeptical about its functionality, but when I received it and started using it, I could see why many health and fitness swear by it. One of the more controversial tracks from our Sonic CD album, and an arrangement that stood out with its brazen punk/rock aesthetic as compared to a stronger vein of hip-hop & funk, DusK's take on 'Sonic Boom' is a fun vocal romp through one of the first redbook vocal VGM jams that I can remember. If you approach this mix as a traditional rock vocal arrangement, you're going to be disappointed, I'll just put that out there to begin with - this is rough & tumble, spontaneous, electrifying PUNK with a capital P, and can only be properly enjoyed as a punk rock track, in my opinion. If you dig The Clash, The Sex Pistols, or Rancid (which this reminds me of perhaps the most), and you have that sort of mindset/expectation going in, I think you'll appreciate what Dustin's done:

Nokia photo browser download windows 7. 'I did this track for Temporal Duality. My primary inspiration behind the remix was Sonic Adventure. The Adventure games had a punk rock sound that I really dig, and I really wanted to set out on a remix that would reflect what I think 'Sonic Boom' would sound like if it were in one of those games.

When I first heard the 'Opening Theme' version, I was like, 'I could totally punk this out.' And then I heard the 'Closing Theme' version and that sealed the deal, and I made my claim. I really tied to capture a lot of elements from both versions and bring them in; the pace, guitar riffs, and chorus vocal timings from the 'Opening Theme' version, and the vocal harmonies and overall feel of the bass from the 'Closing Theme' version. Slapped it into a gritty punk track with slightly distorted, gainy vocals, prominent bass, and crunchy guitars reminiscent of 90s punk bands, and called it a day. Week. Several months, actually. Enjoy. :)'

If you're not familiar with punk or you're not into it, well yeah.. this might not be your jam. I've always found it to be a pretty refreshing genre in terms of spontaneity and nonchalance w/ regard to technique & subtlety, although The Clash arguably deviated from that with a lot of their higher-concept stuff and mixed instrumentation, and they're my favorite punk band. At any rate, Dustin's own comments really explain what you're hearing and lay it all out, and in the context of doing a 90's punk rock take on this theme, I think he did a great job - the energy & attitude are what's most important, and both come through in spades. Jivemaster provided the other vocal ReMix of this theme on Temporal Duality, and I really agree with what he had to say:

'I remember this one back during the Temporal Duality remix project, although I can see you made some improvements since then. Some great guitar work as always from Dustin, with many licks and original solos throughout. Arrangement wise you're solid, and the source is here in droves. Quickbooks 2013 torrent download.

Your vocals here are well done and decent enough. I have no major problems with them, considering the mix sits in punk territory. I would say that there is the occasional flat note here and there, but it is quite a hard song to sing and I think being in the punk genre it's certainly passable.

Production wise I like your use of panning for backup vocals and your leads. It's this kind of creative movement around the stereo spectrum that brings that extra level of quality. Everything is audible and well recorded.'

To be 110% clear, a pitch-perfect, uber-polished vocal would be completely out of place in a punk track and would arguably confuse the genre past the point of recognition - in other words, it's a staple. There's certainly a range within that space where things can get too rough/flat/sharp/atonal, and there might be a moment here or there where some refinement wouldn't have ruined the vibe, but all in all I think DusK did a great job & punk rocked it out, adding something very different to the album and working in a genre we just don't see a lot of on OCR.

20 Iconic Smartphones of the Decade Past

Smartphones have become a vital part of life for most of us. We spend most of our day with a smartphone — even more than what we devote to our loved ones. But what makes them important for us? Is it the mobility that we get from them? Or is it the smartness that they provide to us while on-the-move? Well, answers to such questions depend on how you use the smartphones. But one thing is quite clear that smartphones have evolved a lot from what we had in the past. They’ve got new designs, vivid display panels, multiple cameras, and more powerful processors than workstations of yesterday. But which were the best smartphones of the decade past?

Apple, BlackBerry, Samsung, HTC, and Nokia were the initial smartphone companies that set some benchmarks for young contenders such as OnePlus, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Chipmakers largely including Qualcomm and MediaTek have also helped the market grow faster than ever predicted with processors supporting newer tasks and enhanced performance experiences. Both Apple and Google have also significantly improved their respective mobile operating systems, iOS and Android, which are running on all smartphones nowadays.

Having said that, there were some smartphones that tickled the public’s fancy and set the trend in the market. We here cover all those iconic smartphones that have made history in the last 10 years and influenced the market to keep up the pace. Here are the best mobile phones of the decade past.

Apple iPhone 4

Apple back in June 2010 brought the iPhone 4 as its distinctly designed smartphone over the previous iPhone models. The iPhone 4 had a glass-sandwich design along with a metal frame that was copied by a large number of smartphone companies, including some Indian vendors such as Lava and Karbonn. The fourth-generation iPhone model also offered a slim waistline and an optimised software experience along with a list of apps and iOS 4. However, Apple faced the infamous “Antennagate” issue thanks to the glitch in designing the antenna gap. The company did try to fix it by offering bumpers and overhauling the antenna structure on the iPhone 4s.

Samsung Galaxy S

In 2010, when Apple was flourishing with huge domination in the smartphone market, Samsung brought the Galaxy S as its flagship phone to closely compete against the iPhone. The Samsung Galaxy S, which precisely debuted in March 2010, ticked all the boxes that the market set for a top-notch smartphone. It had a Super AMOLED display, Samsung Exynos (Hummingbird) SoC, and as much as 16GB of onboard storage to take on the iPhone. Samsung also provided a Corning Gorilla Glass protection that later became usual for all mid-range and premium smartphones. The Galaxy S ran Android 2.1 Eclair out-of-the-box along with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI on top.

Nokia 808 PureView

Nokia, much before the era of its brand licensee HMD Global — exactly in February 2012, unveiled the Nokia 808 PureView as its masterpiece. The phone didn’t include a lightning fast processor or desktop-sized RAM, but what it had was a 41-megapixel camera sensor that had used an interpolation technique to pack five distinct pixels into one. It set the benchmark for today’s smartphones that have cameras with a megapixel count of 48, 64, or 108 — thanks to similar pixel binning techniques. The Nokia 808 PureView also had a Xenon flash instead of merely including an LED flash model. However, it ran Nokia Belle that was based on Symbian OS 10.1 over Android.

Google Nexus 4

Google tied up with LG to launch the Nexus 4 in October 2012. The smartphone offered flagship-like specifications at a mid-range price point. It also provided stock Android 4.2 Jelly Bean along with guaranteed updates for some time. The Google Nexus 4 also include wireless charging support and features such as active noise cancellation and a polarised glass with a 3D pattern finish. All those highlights made the Nexus 4 a compelling Android smartphone against the competition.

HTC One was unveiled back in February 2013 to counter the likes of the Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III. The smartphone that debuted with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean had an aluminium unibody construction that made it an eye-catching option against its competitors. Also, HTC offered stereo front-mounted speakers that were equipped with BoomSound technology. The curved back design of the HTC One aided ergonomics and provided a good grip in the hand. There were also white polycarbonate bands to give room to the integrated antennas. Overall, the design of the HTC One made it a trendsetter, and its aesthetics were clearly featured later on models such as the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T. Apple also offered a similar antenna design on the iPhone 6.

Xiaomi Mi 3

Xiaomi Mi 3 debuted in September 2013. It was designed initially for China, but the phone reached markets including India that helped make the Beijing-based company a household name. The Mi 3 offered top-of-the-line specifications of its time that included a 5-inch full-HD display and a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC — all at an affordable price. It also had an attractive design that was made through a unibody shell that became an example for newer smartphones by not just Xiaomi but also many of its competitors. The smartphone also had Android 4.4.2 KitKat at the time of its launch along with MIUI.

LG G Flex

LG G Flex had a flexible display and battery along with a self-healing coating at the back that all made it to our list of iconic smartphones of the decade past. Launched in October 2013, the LG G Flex had a curved P-OLED display that was equipped along with the flexible lithium polymer battery to provide a curved design. The smartphone ran Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean with LG’s Optimus UI that brought features such as Dual Window and QSlide to distinguished the experience.

Moto G

Motorola back in November 2013 launched the Moto G as its budget smartphone targeted at emerging markets. The smartphone helped Motorola gained huge popularity in growing markets including India and Brazil years after its comeback following a split into two separate entities — with Motorola Mobility serving the consumer market and Motorola Solutions deliver enterprise offerings. The Moto G had a simple and sober design that appealed to the masses. Similarly, the stock Android experience that was initially based on Android 4.3 Jelly Bean provided fair enough convenience. The affordable price of the Moto G also made it amongst the early smartphones to kick off the budget wars in the market.

OnePlus One

OnePlus, the Shenzhen-based company that is amongst the top-five premium smartphone brands in markets such as India, started its journey in the smartphone world with the OnePlus One back in April 2014. Titled as the “Flagship Killer”, the phone had Android 4.4 KitKat-based CyanogenMod (CM11S). It was one of the highly acclaimed smartphones among app developers — thanks to the openness provided by CyanogenMod to customise the experience. The OnePlus One also brought the trend of limited availability through its invite-only system. It was later transformed into flash sales that companies such as Xiaomi adopted to create enough hype of their new offerings.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge was launched in March 2015 with a dual-edge curved display. It made the trend of using curved glass panels that we saw not only on some of the recent Galaxy Note-series models but also on phones such as the BlackBerry Priv and OnePlus 7 Pro. The Galaxy S6 Edge featured a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a Corning Gorilla Glass 4 protection. The handset also had a heart-rate sensor and wireless charging support. It ran Android 5.0.2 Lollipop.

BlackBerry Priv

After facing many ups and downs, BlackBerry brought the BlackBerry Priv as its pure Android smartphone in September 2015. The smartphone also retained the company’s legacy of offering a physical QWERTY keyboard — but in a slide-out design. The keyboard made it a promising option for professionals and business users. Running on Android 5.1.1, the BlackBerry Priv offered a full-fledged Android experience along with Android for Work support of enterprise users. The device also had a curved-edge display. Since it wasn’t based on BlackBerry 10 OS aka BB10, the Priv didn’t have a gesture controls. Instead, the phone had on-screen navigation keys.

Lenovo Phab 2 Pro

Lenovo tied up with Google and unveiled the Phab 2 Pro in June 2016 as the world’s first smartphone based on Project Tango platform, which was aimed augmented reality (AR) computing to mobile devices. The smartphone had a unique camera setup that offered motion tracking, depth perception, and area learning. In addition to its AR features, the Lenovo Phab 2 Pro had Dolby Audio 5.1 Capture technology for recording 3D surround sound experiences. The smartphone also had a large, 6.4-inch QHD IPS display and came with Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.

Xiaomi Mi MIX

A large number of smartphone vendors the days claim to offer a full-screen experience. But if we need to find out the trailblazer of that segment, it is none other than the Xiaomi Mi MIX. The smartphone was launched back in October 2016 as a concept phone along with Android 6.0 Marshmallow. But shortly after its initial preview, it went on sale in China. The near bezel-less display of the Mi MIX was its USP, though it also had a piezoelectric acoustic earpiece speaker as well as an ultrasonic proximity sensor as the two key highlights. The selfie camera of the Mi MIX was also claimed to be 50 percent smaller in size over the conventional sensors and was placed at the bottom right corner of the phone to give enough space for the display.

Apple iPhone X

In September 2017, Apple revamped its iPhone family by unveiling the iPhone X. The new iPhone model, which was the tenth anniversary iPhone, was completely different in looks and design from what we saw earlier. With a display notch, it housed facial recognition sensors, bringing the tech to the mainstream and introducing Face ID as an upgrade to the existing fingerprint recognition technology that the Cupertino company called Touch ID. Also, the iPhone X — originally based on iOS 11 — was amongst the first successful smartphones with a completely button-less front panel. Apple also provided a vertically-placed dual camera setup that made a trend in itself.

Razer Phone

Razer, the company that’s popular for developing gaming peripherals, launched the Razer Phone back in November 2017. The smartphone, which was the predecessor to the Razer Phone 2, had IGZO IPS display panel with 120Hz refresh rate to deliver immersive gaming experiences. There was also a wide colour gamut to impress mobile gamers. The Razer Phone had a dual front-firing speakers along with THX-certified amplifiers and Dolby Atmos integration to deliver a surround sound experience. The phone came with Android 7.1.1 Nougat at the time of its launch. It all-in-all set a benchmark for gaming phones.

Vivo X20 Plus UD

Vivo launched the X20 Plus UD in January 2018 as the world’s first smartphone to carry an under-display fingerprint sensor. It included the Synaptics-made under-display fingerprint sensor that was touted to detect a fingerprint in few milliseconds. The presence of the under-display fingerprint sensor, which later became the new normal among Chinese smartphones and widely called in-display fingerprint sensor, replaced the requirement of having a physical fingerprint sensor. The Vivo X20 Plus UD that was based on Android 7.1 Nougat also came with a matte back panel that just had the dual rear camera setup along with an LED flash.

Huawei P20 Pro

Huawei unveiled the P20 Pro in March 2018 as the world’s first smartphone with a triple rear camera setup. The Huawei P20 Pro had a camera setup that included an 8-megapixel sensor with 3x optical zoom thanks to a Leica telephoto lens and a 40-megapixel RGB sensor. The third sensor was placed next to the dual camera setup that had 20-megapixel resolution. It was a monochrome sensor — meant to enhance sharpness. Further, the P20 Pro included 4D Predictive Focus and six-axis image stabilisation. The smartphone was launched with Android 8.1 Oreo.

Vivo Nex

Vivo Nex was unveiled in June 2018 as the world’s first smartphone with a pop-up selfie camera. The company used an elevating mechanism that was later adopted by its homegrown competitors such as Huawei and Xiaomi. The Vivo Nex also included Vivo’s Screen SoundCasting technology that replaced the earpiece from the front side and provides a nearly bezel-less display. Further, the smartphone had the in-display fingerprint sensor that was different from the sensor available on the Vivo X20 UD. The smartphone came with Android 8.1 Oreo.

Samsung Galaxy A8s

Samsung launched the Galaxy A8s in December 2018 as the world’s first smartphone with a hole-punch display panel. The South Korean company called the panel the Infinity-O Display that reached various newer Galaxy-series models, including the Galaxy S10e and Galaxy Note 10 family. The Samsung Galaxy A8s based on Android 9 Pie also had a triple rear camera setup and an aluminium frame. Nevertheless, the hole-punch display was the USP of the Galaxy A8s that set the stage of many other similar-looking smartphones.

Samsung Galaxy Fold

Samsung Galaxy Fold is arguably the world’s first foldable smartphone for the masses. Launched in February this year, the phone comes with a flexible display that measures 7.3 inches and can deliver a tablet-like experience. There is also a secondary display that comes into force once the handset is folded. Although Samsung saw some criticism over the flimsy design of the Galaxy Fold, it made some improvements and fixed the initial design flaws to make the smartphone ready for the global markets. The Galaxy Fold runs Android 9 Pie so far, though it is likely to receive an update to Android 10 sometime next year.

Seamless Loading In BWC

I'd like to take a moment to explain how I achieved the single most significant effect in Banality Wars Carridin. I'm of course talking about the instant loading. The effect where you tap on a map and the camera seamlessly zooms in. As I write this I'm realizing this comes off as bragging but I am really proud of this.

Not to say it's actually that amazing. It really puts into context how much work goes into achieving certain transitions in movies because they likely employ similar techniques. This is probably child's play to them. "Oh, you did the cool transition once? We did it like 36 times in this 2 hour motion picture. Only ours were done in the real world where we couldn't control every pixel on the screen and we had to juggle various visual and practical effects."

Well... Well... It's impressive to me!

The Thinking

The main menu didn't always have instant loading. I don't have any earlier images but it originally worked a bit like the Advance Wars Days of Ruin map loading (pictured above), as that's what this game is based on. So you have this 2D grid of map icons and you select one, it fades to black, and you enter into the map.

Now this is all fine and dandy. Except if you're the developer. I think when you're the developer of a game the small problems are magnified like 100x. You may see a perfectly acceptable loading screen. After all, all games have loading screens. And as a developer I'm like, "Why is this transition 5 seconds!?! Wholly unacceptable." So, yeah, the loading screens really bothered me.

Also Unity is really bad at loading new scenes for some reason. There is always a stutter. You might have seen loading screens that are animated. They'll play like a little animation while the next level loads. Yeah, not possible in Unity. There will always be a very noticable stutter which was driving me even crazier.

The Idea

So Banality Wars Carridin was through and through a mobile game. So I took some queues from Android. Android had recently gotten a new WebOS-inspired multitasking menu joining a long line of devices to rip off WebOS multitasking including iOS and Blackberry's QNX.

I actually think the old multitasking method in Android with the cards is superior. Anyways that's not the point. I was using this multitasking menu and I was like, "Hey, I could do that. Just tap on a map and instead of loading it would just zoom right in."

And then I was immediately like, "No I couldn't, it's too complicated. I could never load in data that fast. Just the spawning of gameobjects alone would take forever."

Enter ECS

ECS stands for Entity Component System. It means different things to different people. Some may use ECS as a way of structuring data so that it is 'cache friendly'. Some may use ECS to organize data so it is easier to add to without making spaghetti code. And still others, like me, use ECS to instantly load content.

Here's the video I saw that pitched me on the idea:

The creation of a new object (like a player or a tile or an obstacle or whatever) is called instantiation. And as this video shows it takes quite some time to instantiate objects with the old system. Around 0.07ms per object according to the video. Which is fine if you're just spawning one or two. But the instant load system would require thousands to be spawned very quickly.

Looking back on it maybe I could have gotten away with the old system. Just hide all the loading behind an initial loading screen that's a few seconds longer than it had to be.

Anyways, I did some experimenting. It seemed the cost of spawning a new item is the same as creating a new Matrix4x4 (a block of 16 numbers). That is to say, basically instant. And the more I thought this instant loading thing was a really bad idea, the more I started to think maybe it could actually work.

Saving

So I had the basic framework of the system. In the editor (that is the Unity program that actually makes the game) I have to press the play button. Upon doing so the system will save a copy of the map (using a tool called Easy Save) to the Resources folder. This is the folder that is accessible after building.

Once this is done I could load the map from anywhere in the game. Of course this would require me to overhaul my system to support saving. Every object would have to be saved. Well, not every object. Just the important ones. I always intended to do this eventually, but I didn't expect to have to do it so soon.

Saving is actually surprisingly difficult. Unity uses C#, an Object Oriented Language. And one of the benefits of an Object Oriented Language is that you get to do inheritance. Basically a trick that allows you to share code between objects like units. But you can't use inheritance when doing saving so I had to rewrite a lot of stuff and 'flatten the inheritance hierarchy' as the kids say.

But this also helped in another way. Now I could use this same code to save a game in progress. Which is pretty useful. This also allows the game to display not the map we saved earlier in Resources but display the map in progress. Pretty trivially to. All we have to do is tell the game to 'load the map from our local folder, not resources'.

The Actual Hand-Off

I considered getting a more zoomed in shot but this is good enough to illustrate the point. This is being recorded from Unity's Scene View. Basically a second camera you can use to view things the player won't be able to see.

The first thing you can see is things not in the view frustum (basically the area the player can see) appears as generic black boxes (it's a bit hard to see). This is an optimization step. It's called culling. It should be handled by the GPU but for whatever reason it's not. Maybe it's a problem with ECS. Oh well.

Anyways so let's break it down.

Tap on the map

Zoom in while dragging UI components away from the visible area (this is because if we didn't do this they'd suddenly disappear on the final frame which looks weird)

Load the rest of the fucking map

Sorry. Couldn't resist. But the process to load the map is quite complex. Well, actually no, it's not that complex. Just spawn all the tiles, the buildings, the roads, the units, and then use some trigonometry to figure out where the camera should be.

And unloading the map is done similarly. Just in reverse. The only real hard part is to find the initial camera position. This actually has to be saved to a file otherwise we must use a crude approximation of the location.

The Results

So as you can see the final result is quite impressive.

Too impressive maybe.

The Future

To be honest I'm not exactly happy with how it turned out. "Why?" you ask. Well, it's all about performance. I'm not convinced that this ECS system is very performant. Oh, here's a secret: on Android the sprites are rendered using GPU instancing while on iOS they are not because iOS apparently doesn't support this. So on iOS the ECS sprite rendering method is actually slower than the traditional method. Android should be faster but I'm not 100% sure as having this many sprites has resulted in some workarounds like the culling technique earlier.

I'm always super jealous of those games that can run on a potato while my monstrosity barely hits 60 FPS on a modern mid-range device. I don't know, maybe the grass is always greener on the other side.

Also there is the aliasing problem. Aliasing is when there's super small details that appear to flicker. You can see a lot of aliasing in the map previews.

To fix this I should probably use lower resolution versions of the tiles. But then I might as well just load the maps normally. Which I could do. Also the campaign maps will sometimes have intro dialog. I could just do it like WarGroove and have a little window that pops up with the dialog.

Well, one things for sure: I have a lot of work ahead of me.

Intro to React and Redux

TF is this?

I used the boilerplate project built by Cory House (Twitter: @housecor), SlingShot to build my company's transition into React. This was chosen because of his excellent PluralSight videos, and I felt that the patterns used were generally community accepted and thought out. Any reference to "this project" could be considered standard defined from Cory House, or just my whim.

Background (skip this if you just want to learn some react/redux)

I was working in a silo for two years, building out the front-end for a site that runs on .NET and MVC architecture. There is nothing wrong with server-side rendered pages. But our front-end was thrown together with little thought to re-usable peices. For example, there are at least 5 layout templates for a website that you log into and view a few pages (think accessing your bank account).

Our end-users have really bad internet connections. With a slow server-side rendered website, most used the native apps. It was most apparent when we had an extremely high-usage day, which brought the native mvc site to a crawl, but native apps were fine calling our new APIs. Had the site been fully converted to the React framework built for new features (as opposed to redoing the entire site in high priority), it would have likely persevered through the high traffic.

That's all well and good, 20-20 past vision stuff. But it still points to why I wanted to push for a SPA driven by React and Redux. The whole intention of the site is to act like the native apps, so let's bring it up to speed!

All that said, I decided to leave for several reasons, but I wanted to make sure any of the devs, including all .NET devs, native android, and native iOS devs, would at least have something to refer to besides just the general "here's how he built this so let's use that pattern" learning. I hope it's helpful for them, and I hope this reaches anyone else interested in React and Redux. There are a shit-ton of tutorials out there, I'm hoping I can make a TL;DR version of Cory's awesome 6+ hours of lessons.

Component Structure

Components can be written as a function or by extending the React.Component class. This projects uses the Container/Dumb Component pattern where "smart" components are considered containers, and dumb components (under /components) take props and know how to display them.

Props

Props are the data passed into a component. They can be any javascript value type, which allows for display data or functions that need to be executed within the component. props are the first param passed to a functional component. Access props from a class component by using this.props.

PropTypes

Every component should define its prop's types. This enforces type checking for the linter and testing, as well as will be generated in the npm run gendocs script. You will also see console warnings if an unexpected type is used in development mode. The standard pattern is to declare the component as a const or class, and before exporting, assign the propTypes object:

When extending the React.Component class, you may see propTypes as a static property in tutorials. This is fine, however the pattern in this project still maintains them outside of the class declaration, mostly for consistency.

If your component can work without requiring access to React's lifecycle methods and manage state, it is better to create it as a function so as to not add the ES6 class overhead. However, do not make that prevent you from using the class structure if needed.

The most typical needs for React's lifecycle access are setting up/managing component state and retrieving data before a render. Below is an example of a component that handles state management. Note that this is referring to the "component state." Meaning this is just pure React at this point, without introducing Redux app state management.

Here's a simple incrementer/decrementer component:

So what is happening here? The constructor is run at the initial load of the component. super(props) is simply passing props to the React.Component abstract class. We want to define our intentional state for this component. In this case, we just want to keep track of what the amount to display is. The binding is a side-effect of ES6 classes. There are several ways to handle dealing with this in a class, specifically with render(), but this is the most resource efficient way, it just adds a few extra lines.

increment() and decrement() are class methods that are simply updating the component state. You cannot mutate this.state directly, which is where this.setState() comes in. It is a React function that accepts an object of what the new state will be, and when called, will trigger a component re-render. So anytime the state is updated, render() is called and the state values will be updated.

render() is the override for React.Component that must return jsx. In this case the component is providing the amount display and the buttons to modify that amount. Note that jsx requires a single opening and closing tag surrounding all others.

This is invalid. If you do not want to introduce a wrapping html element, you can use the `` tag to prevent additional html written to the DOM.

Redux Preview

This section explains how a component can trigger data retrieval and access the Redux store. It may be worth checking out the vocab section of Redux first.

Retrieving data for a component can be done by overriding componentWillMount() and firing off your required actions. Most commonly something like:

This will cause the spinner to display, dispatch the action to call the api to retrieve transactions, then hide the spinner. await is used here because we know GetTransactions is asynchronously calling the API.

Accessing The Redux Store

Redux is built in a way that it can be used without React, so in order for a component to access the store, we use the react-redux package, which provides an HoC (Higher-order Component) function called "connect".

This essentially wraps your component and returns a new component that has store access. It takes up to 4 params, but typically you will only use the first two: mapStateToProps and mapDispatchToProps.

mapStateToProps is a function that is supplied with the state (store) object. You must return and object from this function, providing any props that require data from the state. For example:

A couple things to note in this example. - We are using destructuring to declare isLoading and transactions. If you are unfamiliar, it was introduced in ES6 (https://hacks.mozilla.org/2015/05/es6-in-depth-destructuring/) - In render(), a list of `` tags are built by mapping an array of objects and returning jsx. This is a useful feature as you can build jsx sections piecemeal. - mapStateToProps is declared outside of the component class. This is because it isn't tied to the component itself. - mapStateToProps is creating its own prop, isLoading by computing off of the redux state, where transactions is just plucked directly. This is fine, the point is your component does not have to necessarily follow the redux state structure. - Another note about this, is the concept of selectors. This concept houses how the data is returned from state, but a more advanced topic worth diving into when you're more comfortable. - The second param for connect is an empty object, this is addressed in the next section - TransactionList is wrapped in parenthesis after connect is executed. This is shorthand for:

mapDispatchToProps

This is used to provide dispatch. Dispatch is simply a function that takes an object with an action type and any additional data (must define a type as a string). Reducers are listening for dispatch actions. They are simply a giant switch statement that intercepts the dispatch type and determines if/how to update the redux store. More information on dispatch Usage of this within components can vary, and this project abstracts a lot of it out into defining actions (/actions). The more manual way to set it up in your component is as follows:

For farmer Richard Mamani it's part of a family tradition. Like his parents before him, he uses water from untreated sewage to tend to vegetables that are his livelihood in the town of Valencia south of La Paz. He has had safe drinking water for some years, but he says it's too expensive to use it on his fields. "We don't use fertilizers and look," he said, proudly pointing to corn and other vegetables. Bolivia is one South America's poorest countries and the world's highest capital lacks a waste water treatment plant. The untreated fetid waters from households and factories flow into the Choqueyapu, Cotahuma and Orkohauira rivers that run from La Paz to the city's southern agricultural hub. A 2013 environmental report by Bolivia's comptroller general described them as in a "very bad quality range." The Environment and Water Ministry says it hopes to change this with the construction of the city's first water treatment plant. But for now, most of the produce that arrives in the early mornings at the markets in La Paz is often contaminated. An audit by the comptroller general said that out of a sample, "12.5 percent of agricultural products were acceptable; 25 percent were mildly acceptable; and 62.5 percent were rejectable." Some carry parasites, including E.coli. Symptoms of E. coli infection include diarrhea, severe stomach cramps and vomiting. There are no specific studies available that point to the impact on the health of the population, but the National Institute for Health Laboratories says 70 percent of acute diarrheic illnesses are linked to eating contaminated food, including vegetables. The contamination is also a problem in rivers in other Bolivian cities such as Cochabamba and Santa Cruz, where 65 percent of Bolivia's 11 million people live. Mining often pollutes waterways in smaller cities. Before leveling his sentence, Judge William Pauley said “Cohen pled guilty to a veritable smorgasbord of fraudulent conduct" and “lost his moral compass,” adding that “as a lawyer, Mr. Cohen should have known better.” In addition to his imprisonment, Cohen will have to pay $1.39 million in restitution plus $500,000 in forfeiture for the financial and campaign finance crimes. He will face an additional fine of $50,000 for lying to Congress. For more than a decade, Cohen stood by Trump’s side as a personal attorney, fixer and confidant, famously proclaiming that he would “take a bullet for the president” and “never walk away.” But over the past year, as investigators targeted his personal finances, Cohen flipped on his former boss and cooperated in multiple investigations, including Mueller's probe, targeting Trump’s campaign and family business operations. Special counsel Robert Mueller, tasked with investigating Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, tacked on an additional count of lying to Congress last month. Cohen pleaded guilty to all nine counts and struck a deal to cooperate with ongoing investigations. Before ruling was issued, Cohen had pleaded for leniency, accusing President Trump – his former boss – of causing him to “follow a path of darkness rather than light” and “cover up his dirty deeds.” Cohen’s attorney, Guy Petrillo, argued that Cohen “came forward to offer evidence against the most powerful person in the country.” But while the special counsel’s office appeared to be willing to give Cohen credit for his cooperation, SDNY prosecutors took a tougher stance. In court on Wednesday, Jeannie Rhee, a prosecutor with the Office of the Special Counsel, said Cohen had provided “wide ranging and helpful” information on matters related to the Russia probe while being careful not to inflate the value of that information. Nicolas Roos, a prosecutor with the Southern District of New York, however, struck a different tone. Federal prosecutors allege that Cohen violated campaign finance laws by paying off two women who allege to have had affairs with Donald Trump acting “in coordination with and at the direction of” the then-candidate. Trump has argued the payments amount to nothing more than a “simple private transaction,” and do not qualify as campaign finance violations. Rep. Eric Swalwell, a California Democrat and vocal critic of the president, said he believes the Cohen sentence will send a powerful message. “Hopefully this signals to others that it’s time to come clean,” Swalwell said. Swalwell is one of several Democrats who are voicing interest in having Cohen return to Congress to testify in public, even if it means transporting him from prison to do so. “Cohen is one of the only individuals who lived in Donald Trump’s personal, political and financial worlds,” Swalwell said. “I would like to see Michael Cohen come clean, wholly before Congress, about what the president knew and what he was doing politically and financially with the Russians. I would like to hear from him.
